Drawing - Graphite On Paper
Description
In this calm yet sensual picture, adapted from a very-early vintage 1800s photograph by Thomas Eakins, a naturally glamorous art model luxuriates on a Victorian settee with her back to us, her lithe torso supported by her left arm, her head turned so she is discreetly looking away, her long dark hair cascading smoothly down her left arm. An appealingly luscious female reclining nude figure study created in many types of graphite, lovingly rendering on paper this most timeless subject of fine art, the shapely ideal of feminine beauty. The artist's gentle measured layering of the graphite creates an appealingly clean and smooth look -- almost a silvery quality, even as his eye for detail faithfully captures every fine detail of the fair feminine back of the model. From the light and shadows and reflections of the modeling on the surface of the woman's skin, the viewer can almost feel the gorgeous ample flesh of this sumptuous female figure. Eakins's vintage photograph was darkly gothic and forbidding; Kirkman's adaptation is boldly bright and welcoming.
